Online gambling operators including Ladbrokes, Betfair, Coral and William Hill are planning to sue Italian Government over loss of income. The companies are going to sue using the Remote Gambling Association (RGA).
Clive Hawkswood, RGA representative, said that the lawsuit was submitted as a response to section 66 of Italy's draft Finance Act 2006. The gambling operators claim that the new law in Italy violates five areas of the European Community legislation since its forbidding access to certain online gambling websites.
The new Italian law stipulates that Internet access providers can face fines of up to £120,000 if they allow access to blacklisted websites. Some of the blacklisted websites include the gambling operators' websites, among other 600 offshore gambling sites that are being restricted.
The case will be discussed at the European Union courts shortly and Industry sources claim that the compensation may run into millions of pounds.
