Local police are reporting that a 15 year old boy with severe mental retardation was found the other day wondering around the pool of the Comfort Inn Suites pool unattended. The hotel has said that the boy was not a guest at the hotel.
Police were taking the child to a shelter for kids under the assumption that he had been abandoned since he was found with no identification and could not tell police his name or address, when his mother showed up looking for him.
The mother admitted to leaving the child at the hotel pool while she went to a casino close by to the Council Bluffs hotel to play the slot machines.
The mother was not arrested but she will have to appear in court where a judge will make a decision on whether or not the mother is fit to continue to take care of the child. In the mean time the child is still in the care of his mother, but the police are making an effort to locate the Childs father.
If the mother is found to be unfit to take care of the child, then the child will be taken from her by child protective services and will be placed with another relative if one can be found if not, the child will be placed in foster care until such time as the mother can prove to the judge that she can take care of the child, and that she will not leave him unattended again.
