South Carolina State lawmaker is trying to change state laws by allowing poker to be played at home

One of South Carolinas State Lawmakers is attempting to change the state laws about poker games at home.

He is writing up a bill that would allow poker games to be played at peoples home as long as the game could be considered recreational activity. This means you may not decide to open a for profit poker room from your home.

The bill is still in the early stages, and would be part of a larger effort to modernize South Carolinas 200 year old gambling laws, which not only outlaw card and dice games, but some would argue technically outlaw popular board games such as monopoly.

The idea to change the laws came after a raid of a home last month that ended in the arrest of a 28 year old that will be charged with operating a gambling establishment. He was given a fine of $747, but received no jail time.

The lawmaker said he knows his bill will not only have many of his republican peers voting against it. "I'm going to have a million people against it," he said.

He also said that he wants to make sure that his proposal does not open the door to organized gambling houses, "my goal is not to allow casino style gambling taking place in people?s homes."
