The California Assembly approved a law that would permit nonprofit organizations to raise funds by having casino night events including card games or games of chance.

The majority of the Assembly members from both parties had approved the bill, said to Assembly member Alberto Torrico. Torrico is a member of the Newark Democrat Party and he was responsible for the law proposal.

The law proposal follows verdicts that ruled that charitable events are not allowed to use games except bingo. Some charity events were canceled in fear of being interpreted by the law as illegal. Torrico stated that those non-profit organizations are providing important services to the community.

The new bill would permit each organization to hold one casino night event each year. The prizes on these events are restricted to 500 dollars per prize and 5,000 dollars per event. The law also requires that a minimum of 90 percent from the event profits would have to be dedicated to donations.
