Indiana to Study Legalization

Indiana will put together a committee to study the pros and sons of legalized video gambling

AN Indianapolis lawmaker who is interested in legalizing video gambling machines, which are currently illegal, but common in bars and veterans clubs, has decided that filing legislation to make this change is not yet appropriate.

Instead the Democrat lawmaker has said he will authorize a resolution to put together a committee this summer to study the issue in depth. ?It?s very clear this is almost too complex at this time to write a single bill without more study,? said the lawmaker.

The study should look into how much should the machines revenue should be taxed where the video gambling machines should and should not be allowed and how many of the machines should be allowed in one venue, and in the entire state.

The lawmaker said his decision to not file the legislation came after listening to the House Speaker from South Bend, who opposes the idea.

Another Senator was planning to sponsor a similar bill but is currently recovering from surgery, and is unable to file such a bill, but the Senate President said that he may return in time to file the bill before the deadline, or that latter a house bill could be amended during the session.

Several lawmakers hope that one way or the other something is done about the machines by the end of this year, either by legalizing and taxing them or making the laws and penalties harsher for someone caught offering these games.
