In what may be called the greatest thing to ever happen to the Native Americans since white man showed up, Californian Governor Schwarzenegger made an agreement with the Mono Indian tribe that in order for them to open a casino they must give part of their profits to the Wiyot tribe of Humboldt County.
The Mono Tribe will spend about $250 million dollars on their casino that will be right off of Highway 99 just north of Madero. The exact location still needs approval from the State legislature and the Department of the Interior.
The Wiyot tribe, consisting of around 600 people had to give up its hopes of opening up a casino due to their land being a ecologically important area for Humboldt Bay, and in return they will receive 5 million dollars a year from the Mono tribes casino.
Tribes with casinos are bringing many millions of dollars a year while many other tribes are starving, and the agreement between the Monos and the Wiyots may pave the way to other tribes sharing the their wealth to help bring the standard of living up for all Native Americans.
By spreading the Indian casino wealth around a bit they can prevent too many Indian casinos from popping up and causing an over abundance of these casinos which will lead to fewer and fewer being granted licenses.
If more tribes would agree to share in their casino wealth all Native Americans would have access to food medicine and a proper education which is something many tribes still lack even in the year 2008.
