Montreal Interfaith Group Says Gambling is a Serious Social Problem

An interfaith group of Montreal, the Christian-Jewish Dialogue, describes gambling as a very concerning social problem which governments should regulate more accurately. The Dialogue suggests that gambling should be conducted to charity purposes and urges for a halt to the relocation of Montreal Casino to the Peel area, which is close to the city centre, as well as to gambling expansion in general. The group also calls for a ban of video lottery and slot machines outside casinos.

Victor Goldbloom, a spokesperson for the group, said that they are worried about the increasing dependence of governments on gambling as a source of state income. According the Goldbloom, the main clients of gambling venues are local citizens, because there are not as many tourists who are rich enough to travel around the world to visit different casinos. Those locals who might be in difficult financial situations might view gambling as the solution to their problems. They are vulnerable and likely to become gambling addicts, thus affecting negatively their family and professional life. According to the group the government should prevent this from happening.

The Christian-Jewish Dialogue was founded in 1971 in Montreal and includes different confessions such as Anglican, Eastern Orthodox and Ukrainian Catholic, Roman Catholic, and Jewish.
