In a land where soft drugs like pot and hookers are legal online gambling is still seen as taboo.

The government in Holland is calling for banks and financial institutions to assist the Dutch Government in enforcing a ban on online gambling by stopping all transfers to accounts of any unlicensed and unauthorized online casinos.

Dutch authorities intend to crack down on illegal online casinos and are calling on banks to stop providing financial services to them, a Justice Ministry spokeswoman said on Saturday.

A spokeswoman for the Justice Ministry confirmed that a Swedish online casino and a Dutch online casino are two of the companies that are being focused on for knowingly breaking Dutch laws; they also said the complete list consists of about 50 names, but refused to give the names.

She went on to say that files have been opened on each of the online casinos offering online gambling to Dutch citizens and will be given to the public prosecutor who will be bringing charges on these 50 online casinos.

In Holland to operate any type of gambling operation you must have a license and only the state run lottery currently has a license to offer online gambling. A bill came before the Dutch Upper House recently to allow the Holland Casino to try an online gambling site on a temporary basis as a study to see how well it can be monitored and what effects it would have, but the bill was shot down.

The Dutch Governments ban on online gambling is in direct conflict with the EU's policy of licensing and monitoring all forms of online gambling. The EU has said that if they go thru with stopping money transfers to banks they will have to take action with the courts.
