The Conservative Party has recently carried out an investigation about the effect of new casinos on people drinking habits. Since the extension of legal drinking hours by the Government, according to Conservatives, casinos could become a lethal refugee for potential or current alcoholics.
The new trend of building small casinos downtown is very dangerous for peoples drinking habits. According to the Conservatives, casinos could become super bars with people drinking at any time. This could have a dreadful effect on public welfare and the extra social services that should be planned could be a huge expense for state treasury.
Since the introduction of the Gambling Act 2005, there has been allowed the construction of 8 casinos. According to the Act, these casinos should divide into two areas, one for gambling purposes and another for leisure. This separation of spaces would create super bars which would not close till 6 a.m., say the Conservatives. These casino-bars could have around 3.000 customers. Taking into account that most pubs close at 11 p.m., casinos could become the ideal refugee for compulsive drinkers. A representative for the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, stated that casinos will have to enforce the law and their bars will be under a strict control. Casinos that will not enforce the law will see their licenses revoked and will have to pay serious fines.
The Tory spokesman said that Britain might face a terrible social problem never seen before. She added that although casinos want to give a glamorous image of poker and blackjack tables, most players go there to spend their money on slots or alcohol. Taking into account that slots players usually have alcoholic problems the combination of having dozens of slot machines and a bar open till 6.00 a.m. could be lethal.
