New report suggests that casino workers are facing damage to their health because of long work hours and other poor conditions.
While Glasgow prepares the bid for a new American style super-casino, the new GMB union report revealed that working conditions in casinos are so poor, that about three-quarters of the casinos workers are suffering from back and neck problems, and fifth suffer from carpal tunnel syndrome due to excessive pressure on the nerves.
The GMB survey also reported that about 80% of the casino workers complained of chronic fatigue and sleep disturbance because of the late working hours.
Richard Leonard, GMB's Glasgow organizer for casino workers said that although casinos are seen as glamorous, the view from inside is radically different and that casino operators should work with the government and the trade unions in order to improve the conditions if they don't want it to hurt their own businesses.
The GMB is looking for a zero-tolerance attitude towards abusive customers, longer breaks and shorter shifts. The GMB also said that the new smoking ban will have a positive effect on its members because one of the major complains of casino workers was poor air quality.
