Poker Jargon
Poker players are using a specific jargon when they play. If you want to be a better poker player, you must learn the specific jargon that is being used.
In here we'll list the most common terms that player use. It isn't a full glossary, but it will list the most useful terms.
- Blind- The blind is the name of the forced bets that players have to put. There are two kinds of blinds: small blind and big blind. The player who sits to the left of the dealer must put the small blind. The player who sits after him must put the big blind.
- Flop- The flop is a term that is being used in Texas Hold'em. It means the first three cards that the dealer deals.
- Limit Poker- Limit poker is a game with fixed bets. A player cannot raise or bet in sums that are higher than those which were decided. In no-limit poker, players can raise and bet on any sums that they want to.
- Out- an out is a unseen card that can improve the player's hand. It is common in games where there's more than only one betting round.
- Position- the position is the place where you sin at the poker table. The position has a very important role in the game. The best position is as close to the dealer, because he's the one that bets last. The player who puts the small blind has the worst position, he bets first.
- Rake- the percentage that the house takes from the pot. The casino's profits.
- River- The fifth and final card in Texas Hold'em. It comes after the turn.
- Tournament- A structured set of poker games where players cannot leave the table and take their chips but have to play until they win or are eliminated.
- Turn- The fourth board card in Texas Hold'em. Comes after the flop.
