Casino Etiquette and Behavior Codes

It's true that one of the most basic rules of casino employees is that the customer is always right, but any player must remember that casinos have their own etiquette and behavior codes, and in order to make your gambling experience more fun, you have to know them before you enter the casino and start to play. Unless you enjoy wandering around lost while receiving a chilling attitude from the casino employees, learning how to behave in a casino is not less important than learning how to play the games.

Here are some guidelines and unwritten rules that you must be aware of before you start to play:

  • You cannot enter the casino if you aren't at least 21 years of age. Don't even think about breaking this rule. All casinos are very strict when it comes to this state law, so don't even bother to question their seriousness on this subject.

  • It is not a wise thing to bring electronics with you into the casino. In most casinos the cellular reception is blocked so it's both useless and unaccepted to bring a cell phone with you.
Although it's not a law, in most casinos you won't be able to bring a camera with you, digital or film. But in order to make sure, just ask one of the casino representatives before your arrival.

  • If you smoke, make sure that you're not in a smoking-free casino room, before you light your cigarette. In most casinos, smoking is allowed except for special no-smoking tables or slots area. If you do smoke, use as ashtray.

  • It is accepted to tip the dealer after each winning hand, especially in poker room in the United States. The tips are usually $1, but if you win a large pot, consider giving a larger tip. In other countries like England and Australia, tipping is forbidden.

  • Learn the rules of the game that you want to play in before you sit at the table. Don't ask the dealer or other players to explain you what to do or to guide you through the game. Show respect to the casino and come prepared. There are lots of books and guides, and if you want to learn a game, take some time to watch others play before you start playing yourself.

  • Try to resist the urge to give advices to other players. Even if you think that your advice might help the other players and your intentions are good, you might upset those who you're advising to and the casino isn't looking for angry players. Every player has the right to make his own decisions and mistakes- respect that.
